The Daly Mansion is the historic Bitterroot Valley summer home of nineteenth century American industrialist Marcus Daly. Touring the 24,000-square-foot place, you learn about Daly’s rise from working-class immigrant to Butte copper magnate, and more. The mansion, which has gone through three remodels, is now a Georgian-Revival style home.
It’s fun to step back in time, poking around the three-story home’s 25 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, seven fireplaces (five of which have imported Italian marble), large living room, music room, formal dining room, sun room, trophy room, upstairs sitting room, and third floor billiard hall.
A great time to go is on Dec. 15, when it opens up for an annual community Christmas Party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Santa Claus will be there, as will live holiday music, performances by the River Street Dance Theater, self-guided tours of the mansion, cookie decorating, crafting, story time with Mrs. Santa, photos with Santa, and refreshments. That day, there will be a special holiday admission of $5 for adults and $2 for children. Children under six are admitted free.
The rest of the fall and winter season, tours are available by appointment: $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $6 for children. Again, children under six years old are admitted free. The number to call is (406) 363-6004.
The Daly Mansion is located outside Hamilton, about 45 miles south of Missoula on Highway 269, at mile marker 2.
