The Missoula Writing Collaborative brings literary competence, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and artistic joy to young people through creative writing. We teach children and youth ages 8-18 in school classrooms and community venues, including after school programs, youth homes, and at our annual two-week summer camp, Words With Wings, where young writers explore and write about the urban and natural environs of Missoula.
Our teachers are professional writers who have made writing their life’s work. A number are graduates of the highly-ranked University of Montana MFA program in Creative Writing. Since 1994 the MWC has taught creative writing to approximately 35,000 children, primarily in western Montana, including on the Flathead Reservation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Thirteen of the 20 schools we currently serve are in Missoula. We have served as a mentor organization to writers-in-the-schools programs in Hawai’i, Alaska, and, most recently, Nicaragua.
Our long list of community partners include the Flagship Program, Talbot Youth Homes, the Watershed Education Network, the Montana Natural History Center, the Missoula Art Museum, the Montana Museum of Art and Culture, the Missoula Public Library, Missoula Community Access Television, Mountain Line Bus, the University of Montana, Fact and Fiction Bookstore, and KUFM, Montana Public Radio.
