On the other side of Mount Jumbo, East Missoula is home to the areas’ first sunrises, the Clark Fork River just below the recently-removed Milltown Dam, and the newly-developed Canyon River Golf Course.
Homes in East Missoula consist of 1950s brick bungalows, 1970s ranch-style homes, and old farmhouses. While many of the residents worked at the recently-closed Stimson Lumber Mill, new residents are moving into the neighborhood, especially in the Canyon River golf community.
East Missoula is due east of Hellgate Canyon, a site of many skirmishes between the Salish Indians and white settlers as they traveled through the windy gates of the canyon. Hellgate Canyon opens wide to occasional gusty winds and magnificent views. Newly-developed trails along the river and the Sha-Ron fishing access are attractive amenities for this area.
