If you are taking the plunge and moving to a new state, the process of packing up and traveling to the new place can be even more stressful than your standard house moves. There is a lot more to think about, and rather than being able to duck back to the old house if you’ve forgotten something, your new home could be hours away.
With this in mind, we’re sharing seven things to remember when moving states.
In terms of moving your belongings, use our handy checklist here.
Home insurance
Although it’s unlikely, you’d hate for something to happen in the first few days of moving, only to realize you’d not yet swapped your home insurance over.
As soon as you have a moving-in date, make sure to contact your current provider to switch the address. Alternatively, you might want to shop around for a better deal.
Change of address
It’s never too early to start informing people and companies of your address change. To make it easier, you can change your address for the US Postal Service online. You’ll also need to change the address of your bank account if you still receive postal statements.
Driver’s license and documentation
Most counties expect you to change your driver’s license details within 30 days of moving, so add this to your list of things to do. Similarly, your vehicle registration and insurance will need changing.
Prescriptions
If your pharmacy regularly dispenses your prescriptions for you, make sure to inform a pharmacy near your new home of which medications you’ll need. It’s a good idea to stock up on prescriptions before moving so you’re not without, too.
Medical records
In a similar sense, while you might not need a GP right now, it’s worth signing up for one in the area and having your medical records transferred. Otherwise, when you are ill or in an emergency, it’ll take the doctor longer to process your condition.
Voter registration
You can’t make a difference in how your new state is run if you’re still registered at your old house. Make sure to register to vote in your new province so you can have your say in local and national elections.
Pets and vehicles
If you’re flying to your new home and leaving the moving to a company, don’t forget to arrange transport for your pets and vehicles. Guardian Auto Transport specializes in transporting motorbikes, cars, and electric cars. Get a quote, and you’ve got one less thing to think about – and one less journey to take back to the old digs!
Whether you’re moving for your dream job or moving back home to save money for a new house, the whole thing can be exciting yet overwhelming. It can be easy to forget about all the little things that need to be done along the way to ensure your move is as smooth and plain sailing as possible. Hopefully, this list of things to update will help and potentially remind you of other things you need to remember!
