Description: Every emperor penguin is born with a special “heartsong,” which they use to find a mate. Every penguin, that is, except for Mumble, who is born without a singing voice. His natural talent for tapdancing doesn’t make up for it, either–most of the penguins think his “happy feet” make him a freak. But when Mumble’s loneliness drives him out of his penguin colony, he finds a much wider and wilder world, and learns that his dancing might be the exact thing he needs save it.

Description: World-renown mime and Montana native son Bill Bowers will take the MCT stage Tuesday, June 28 at 7:30 PM for a wonderful evening of family-friendly entertainment. A fundraiser for MCT’s Next Step Prep summer musical theatre training program, speechLess promises to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Bill is a master storyteller and recognized as the most accomplished mime of his generation.
speechLess is a special treat for Bill’s hometown audience, uniquely weaving together some of Bill’s favorite pieces from his many solo shows. An award-winning actor and writer, Bill has performed around the world, as well as in all 50 States appearing on the stages of Broadway, The Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, and the New York International Fringe Festival. His Broadway credits include Zazu in The Lion King and Leggett in The Scarlet Pimpernel. A student of Marcel Marceau, Bill’s physical performance style brings to mind classic performances by Charlie Chaplin, Harrold Lloyd, or Red Skelton. Combined with an easy storytelling charm, a cross between Garrison Keillor and David Sedaris, his show, subtitled Stories With and Without Words, is sure to delight.

National Theater Live: One Man, Two Guvnors (FILM/THEATRE) at the Roxy Theater

Description: For a limited time only, National Theatre Live’s Encore Series brings a selection of award-winning British theatre productions to your local cinema. Featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from host of the The Late Late Show, James Corden, the uproarious One Man, Two Guvnors was a runaway hit both in London’s West End and on Broadway. Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect 6,000 from his fiancee’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart. Simple.

Kenneth Turan is film critic for the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio’s Morning Edition as well as the director of the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes. He has been a staff writer for the Washington Post as well as the Times’ book review editor. A graduate of Swarthmore College and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, he teaches film reviewing and non-fiction writing at USC.
