UM Sports Trivia | Week of July 22

By CHRIS WALTERSKIRCHEN

Former University of Montana quarterback and assistant coach, Brent Pease, is currently the offensive coordinator with the Florida Gators after spending six seasons working with the Boise state offensive. In Pease’s 6 seasons with the BSU Broncos they lost just 7 games and had two perfect seasons. In both 2008 and 2011 The BSU Broncos lost just once and it was to Texas Christian University, the 2001 win propelled TCU into the Rose Bowl. Now, ironically Pease has “lost” another to TCU as his daughter Hallee is headed off to TCU this fall.  Pease commented “At least she not going to be a Bobcat.”

Lady Griz head coach Robin Selvig needs just 2 more wins to reach the 800 win plateau and is likely to reach the milestone before Thanksgiving. None of Selvig’s milestone “hundredth” wins have come against Montana State but four times the Lady Griz came within one game of facing the Bobcats with a milestone in the balance. Selvig got career win 200 against Idaho in February of 1987 a week before facing the Bobcats, in January of 1991 Win 300 came against Idaho State the night before they hosted the Bobcats, in February of 1995 win 400 came at Ogden six days before at match-up with MSU, finally win 500 came at Boise Ste in January of 2000 a week before the Cats came to Dahlberg Arena.

With his win at the British Open Sunday Phil Mickleson joined the elite company of players who have won at least 3 of pro golf’s major titles, with three Masters Wins and a PGA Championship. Mickleson joins the likes of Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer who have won who have won 3 different Major titles.

We were hoping that Britain’s newest Prince would wait until Wednesday to be born. You see It was 30 years ago Wednesday when George Brett of the Kansas City hit a home run against the Yankees in the ninth inning which the Yankees changed because of the amount of pine tar on Brett’s bat. After much protesting the teams return to finish the game 25 days later and the Royals eventually won.

Chris Walterskirchen has been an observer of Montana sports for nearly half a century. A Kalispell native, Chris has worked in various capacities for professional and college sports organization of at various times: ranging from announcing and statistical work to the concessions and even a stint as a costumed mascot.

Chris has academic degrees in communications and elementary education. His style of sports trivia involves more than just who won and who lost, but also focuses on the obscure or human side of sports. In this blog you will learn things like the Grizzly football team has won 210 games over the 19 seasons since they have had Monte as their mascot or that UNLV is the only school that both the Griz and Lady Griz have both faced in the NCAA basketball tournament

When not following sports Chris enjoys taking care of animals of all kinds (a peacock rescue?) and reading to pre-schoolers.
