Martin Breunig is joining the University of Montana’s Grizzly Basketball Program, announced eighth-year Griz head coach Wayne Tinkle.
Breunig (pronounced: BROY-nig), a 6-8, 210-pound forward, is a transfer from the University of Washington. He is originally from Leverkusen, German.
“We are very excited about signing Martin Breunig at the University of Montana,” Tinkle said. “He’s a strong, athletic post player, and he really adds good size and strength to our front line.”
He will redshirt at Montana next season due to NCAA transfer rules, and be a junior eligibility-wise two years from now in 2014-15.
“Moving forward, obviously he has to sit out a year, but that will give him a good adjustment period to learn and understand our system and how we do things,” Tinkle said. “I think he really shores up our post position for the next couple of years with the addition of (a 6-7 junior college forward who recently signed at UM) Chris Kemp and himself; along with (sophomore forward) Jake Wiley and (sophomore center) Andrew Martin.
“We are thrilled to land a player of his caliber, and we’re looking forward to his arrival here,” Tinkle said. “He’s originally from Germany, and he was highly recruited out of a military academy near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which incidently was the same one that Andrew (Martin) went to.”

Breunig played in 30 career games in his two seasons at UW.
He played at St. John’s Northwest Military Academy in Delafield, Wis. as a senior for coach Brian Richert in 2010-11 after coming over to the United States for the first time in August of 2010.
He competed for the junior teams of Bayer Giants Leverkusen in Germany . Prior to coming to the U.S. he played in the NBBL (Nachwuchs Basketball Bundesliga) where he averaged 14.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 2.3 assists per game, while shooting 59% from the field .
He also competed for the German under 18 national team at the FIBA European Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania during the summer of 2010. He originally committed to Maryland.
