Over 350 people will meet in the new classroom space in the basement of the Runner’s Edge, 304 N. Higgins Ave., at 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 10 to start training for July’s Missoula Marathon.
Run Wild Missoula’s 18-week training programs costs $75 for Run Wild Missoula members and $100 for non-members (includes a one year Run Wild Missoula membership). Participants should come dressed and ready to run on the first day of class.
“The quality of the training class will stay the same,” according to Eva Dunn-Froebig, Run Wild Missoula’s executive director. “The only thing that will change is that we will now meet in the new classroom space in the basement of the Runner’s Edge. We have been looking for a larger space for the class to meet as participant numbers have grown over the years and we’re delighted that the Runner’s Edge is allowing us to use their newly remodeled space. I think participants will find it more comfortable for pre-run speakers and post-run snacks and stretching.”
The class starts with distances as low as two miles. Beginners are encouraged to take walking breaks. Those who have not run a step as of the first day of class will be encouraged to set a goal of the half marathon. The program begins conservatively but participants find the miles start adding up quickly.
Running and training for an event for the first time can be intimidating, but keep in mind that “Run Wild Missoula is truly open to everyone, regardless of age, speed or running experience,” according to Run Wild Missoula member Dana Fitz Gale. “The only prerequisite is the desire to run.”
Run Wild Missoula’s Missoula Marathon training class started in 2007 before the first Missoula Marathon with about 30 participants and has grown over the years to exceed 350 runners. Many of the participants come back each year as they find it helps keep them motivated to train and they have developed lifelong friendships in the training class. The class is coached by Anders Brooker, Missoula Marathon Race Director, owner of the Runner’s Edge and Hellgate High School cross country and track coach. It takes dozens of other volunteers to make the training class a success. The Runner’s Edge and Cherry Creek Radio are sponsors of the Missoula Marathon Training Class.
