There are many things in this world that can be harmful to humans, some of the time it feels as though things are out to get us. This is rarely the case unless we find ourselves trespassing on a farmer’s land, but we should always try and protect ourselves from whatever may be thrown our way. It’s the reason we get our children vaccinated when they are young and it’s the reason we wear PPE (personal protective equipment) when we take part in dangerous activities. Even when it comes to extreme sports we wear protective clothing, so why wouldn’t we be aware of things that could be harming us?
Radiation is something we cannot see and can be pretty harmful, so here we take a look at some simple things you can do to protect yourself from radiation.
Understand What It Is
First of all, we should take a look at a little more detail over what radiation actually is. If we have little to no idea about what it is and what causes it, then we won’t be able to protect ourselves. There are two main types of radiation, electromagnetic and particle.
Electromagnetic wave radiation ranges from low to high energy. The low energy EM includes electrical, infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet. Those are the things you may be able to relate to, like phone, laptop, etc…These are relatively harmless, but the professionals from EducateEMF state they have to be taken seriously. With the rise of so many different devices and the launch of 5G, we should be thinking about our safety and what we can do to protect ourselves. At the other end of the spectrum is the high energy EM waves which we now use for diagnostic x-rays. These rays, like gamma rays, are far more powerful and require monitoring. Limited exposure is essential.
Particle radiation is far more serious, it includes electrons, protons, and neutrons. More specifically speaking when electron, proton, and neutron beams are produced from an unstable atom splitting. These atoms are from plutonium and uranium and are more commonly known to us as the nuclear bomb. I would be very surprised if you haven’t heard of this form of radiation, it’s the worst of its kind and high exposure can lead to a whole host of problems, such as cancer, genetic damage, and death. Fortunately, this kind of radiation is relatively rare and won’t be something you come across on a daily basis. Disasters such as Chernobyl are the only time this kind of radiation will affect the human population.
Diet & Nutrition
Eating well and having a healthy balanced diet seems to be a common theme amongst dealing with potentially harmful things to the human body. When it comes to protecting yourself from radiation there is only so much we can do but it’s better to be on top of things just in case. Drinking filtered water each day will keep you hydrated and your system flushed but you should be doing that anyway.
Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants will help your body get rid of toxins laying around, do this by essentially eating colourful foods, eat with your eyes! Cherries, berries, fruits, and sweet potatoes are all fantastic.
Foods rich in chlorophyll are also brilliant here, and the reasons for this is that they contain rich minerals that are fantastic for us. More specifically they contain iodine which helps the receptors in your thyroid, antioxidants such as selenium and chelating agents that attack toxins to rid them of the body. These foods are rich leafy greens such as seaweed, kelp, and chlorella.
Protective Fabric
We have been able to develop some incredible things over the last 20 years and something that has come out on top is EM protective material. Whilst it’s not protective against the big boys of radiation, it can help in our day to day life. Phone covers, laptop mats, even clothing can be made from this material so you can put your mind at ease whilst walking around with your phone in your pocket.
Router
Nearly everyone has a router in your house, that is to say, if you need access to the internet and aren’t living in the 19th century. This comes with an unfortunate side effect which is EM waves within the house. Like we said before it’s relatively not that bad for us but it’s best to stay away from the router whilst we do things like sleep and relax. Try and keep it in a room away from where we spend a lot of time.
Radiation is a scary prospect and something not many of us think about on a daily basis. In some cases, ignorance is bliss, especially if you live out in the country with little to no pollution around you. But many of us live in inner cities and have to start thinking about our safety. Do some more research surrounding what may be radioactive and stay alert.
