Experience western Montana’s Big Sky country for a truly wild adventure, without forgetting the comfort of urban life. Starting from Missoula enjoy some day trips and explore this wonderful area and all its natural beauty while living exciting adventures too. Here are some day trips from Missoula that we highly recommend.
Going to the rivers for some fishing experience
Fly fishing in one of the three rivers that converge in Missoula: the Clark Fork, the Bitterroot, the Black Foot, and that’s what became famous with Redford’s film “A River Runs Through It”. No matter the skill or the fishing experience, this is something you should definitely give a try. Most of the fish that are caught in this area are subject to the catch-and-release law, so do not expect to keep your prey, even if impressive!
Visit Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park with its 26 glaciers, 200 lakes, 1000 miles of rivers, impetuous waterfalls and majestic peaks is certainly one of the most important and fascinating American parks. Here you can go for an excursion or you can even find a place to stay to catch amazing sunrises and sunsets for breathtaking views.
Road tripping the Going-to-The-Sun Road
The Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the most incredible scenic roads in America, a stretch of 80 km that, along impressive mountain colossus, almost gives the idea of climbing into the sky. It is the only road that runs through the park and is obviously the most exploited to take photographs and admire spectacular natural views. Along the the east bank of the sparkling McDonald Lake, you will admire the beautiful flowery expanse of the Garden Wall to take some pictures and then enjoy a nice view of the Jackson Glacier.
Explore the surroundings of the city
To the north is the National Bison Range, only 1 hour away from Missoula. This is the starting point for a scenic itinerary through the nature preserve created by President Theodore Roosevelt to preserve the bison in 1908. You can also see the Rocky Mountain deer, fallow deer, bighorn sheep, mountain puma, coyote and a variety of birdlife.
There are many roads, but the most beautiful is the Red Sleep Mountain Drive 30 km. with stops and paths to explore. To the east, about 40 km, there is the oldest ghost town of Montana, Garnet: it looks like a film set from a Western film, rather than a mining town where the gold miners lived until 1912.
How can you do all this?
A road trip is for sure what you need to see and do all these day trips from Missoula without wasting so much time and without relying on an organized tour making things at someone else’s pace and using pre-structured itinerary.
