Make it Missoula Monday | Week of Oct 5

It’s Make it Missoula Monday.  Each week, Trail 103.3 DJ, Craig Johnson shares his picks of the week for Missoula happenings. You can hear him discuss them on-air each Monday at 9:00 am. Here’s what’s happening this week:

Monday 10/5

My Morning Jacket – Wilma Theatre Grand Reopening (ROCK) at the Wilma Theatre
8PM
All Ages

Description:
Grand reopening of The Wilma Theater with Grammy nominee My Morning Jacket! My Morning Jacket has built a reputation as a group who consistently challenges the paradigms in which they are placed. From psychedelic to soul to classic rock and roll, My Morning Jacket’s range remains steadfast throughout the band’s sixteen years. Known as one of the most engaging, eclectic & electric bands, in no small part due to Jim James’ other-worldly vocals, they’ve become legendary for their live performances. The New York Times wrote this about the band, “…the new kings of expand-your-mind, religious-experience rock…”
131 S Higgins Ave.

My Morning Jacket at the Wilma Theater 10/5 at 8PM.

“S” (ROCK) at the Real Lounge
9PM
Tickets: $6 Advance/$8 DOS
Description: S is former Carissa’s Weird member, Jenn Ghetto’s, radically empathetic rock band. Though S started as a four-track bedroom project, the group’s 2014 full-length album ‘Cool Choices’, produced by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla and released on Hardly Art Records, is a fully formed, deeply vulnerable pop record. It preserves Ghetto’s artfully confessional lyrics while exploring catharsis through intricate guitar hooks, tender piano ballads, and heart-soaring electronic hits. These are sad songs you can sing along to.

Description: We are excited to present pianist Benny Green for the inaugural performance of the UM Jazz Artist Series. A veteran of some of most influential jazz artists including Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Ray Brown and Jeff Hamilton to name a few, Benny Green is arguably the most in demand jazz pianists performing today. Green possesses the history of jazz at his fingertips. Combine mastery of keyboard technique with decades of real world experience playing with no one less than the most celebrated artists of the last half century, and it’s no wonder Green has been hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

Horse Feathers (ROCK) at
the Top Hat Lounge
9PM
18+
Tickets: $12 Advance; $15 DOS
Description: It’s funny how music you’ve never heard before can elicit overwhelming nostalgia. From the moment you hear Portland-based Horse Feathers singer Justin Ringle’s croon on their latest album’s opener “Curse in the Weeds,” it’s hard to forget times of serene happiness in your life.Ringle’s mumble conjures up surreal scenarios of Tracy Chapman doing Sam Amidon, minus any vocal enunciation; rather, it’s the otherworldly music that causes one to get lost in cerebral trauma while driving home alone at night. To be direct, the sound of this album is nothing short of beautiful. Peter and Heather Broderick’s string arrangements mimic Aaron Copland’s most tender moments, and over Ringle’s guitar strumming, the impact is enough to cause the White Witch’s icy heart to melt.
