YWCA Missoula is proud to announce the return of LUNAFEST, a nationally-touring film festival that showcases short films by, for and about women. The festival, which locally benefits the YWCA GUTS! Girls Leadership Program, comes to the Wilma Theatre on Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the event or online through our website: www.ywcaofmissoula.org.
This unique film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through nine short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, motherhood, body image, aging, cultural diversity and breaking barriers.
LUNAFEST was established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the “Whole Nutrition Bar for Women,” to promote women filmmakers, raise awareness about women’s issues, and raise money for women’s organizations across the U.S. and Canada. LUNAFEST has grown from a single annual event to more than 150 film festivals each season, and has raised more than $1.9 million dollars for women’s nonprofits.
Each year, 85 percent of the proceeds from LUNAFEST benefit the YWCA Missoula’s GUTS! Girls Leadership Program, with LUNAFEST’s national partner, the Breast Cancer Research Fund, receiving 15 percent. The money raised will fund scholarships for GUTS! Summer Outdoor Adventures for girls ages 9 to 18.
