Description: In recent years China has chosen to undertake a fascinating and epic fete of social engineering by relocating 250 million people from their rural homes into newly built cities to encourage modernization, combat poverty and consolidate political control. “The Land of Many Palaces” follows a government official whose job is to convince the farmers of Ordos, China that their lives will be better off in the city and a farmer in one of the last remaining villages in the region who is being pressured to move. After the 60-minute documentary, co-director and co-producer Adam James Smith will hold a question and answer session with the audience. Sponsored by the Mansfield Center in conjunction with the East Asian Studies Major.
