The Big Sky Conference has selected the University of Montana’s Martin Breunig (pronounced: Broy-Nig) the co-men’s basketball Player of the Week, it announced today (Monday, 2/23/15). Breunig shared the honor with Northern Arizona guard Kris Yanku.
A 6-8 junior forward from Leverkusen, Germany, Breunig averaged 20.5 points, nine rebounds, 2.5 assists and one block per game as the Grizzlies (12-3/16-10) defeated Idaho State and Weber State to move into a first-place tie with Sacramento State (12-3/18-8).
Breunig had 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks in an 88-77 win over the Bengals. He followed that effort with 19 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in a 74-63 victory over the Wildcats this past Saturday. He has five double-doubles this season.
In the victory over Weber State Breunig had 17 points and 8 rebounds in the second half. In the two wins he made 18-of-26 shots from the floor (69.2%).
Breunig leads the Griz and is ranked fourth in the Big Sky in scoring (16.9 ppg). He is a notch ahead of teammate and senior guard Jordan Gregory, who averages 16.7 points per game and was tabbed the co-player of week on Feb. 16. This is Bruenig’s first Player of the Week honor.
