I know this is a blog about being a mom in Missoula. I will take every advantage to tell you about my sons, how brilliant and beautiful and sweet they are. How very difficult it is to keep up with them. How scary it is to be responsible for their lives, joy and opportunities. How intertwined they are with my happiness.
I will tell you all of these things. But today I am going to tell you about my third baby. My business.
I got an email this week from a mentor of mine congratulating me on some of the exciting turns my business Mamalode is taking. And then she reminded me not to leave Montana behind. It got me thinking about this Treasure State of ours.
I have to say it, in writing: Montana is an amazing place to do business. We have access to amazing people and real connections. We are just a couple of degrees of separation from any one of our legislators, famous residents or resources.
My husband and I got to go to New York City last week (more on this adventure later—remind me to tell you about it, it is a good one.) It is a thrilling place bursting with opportunity. And yet, as we walked by landmark after landmark we marveled at how hard it would have been to launch either of our businesses in a place like Manhattan. How hard it would be to make an impact there.
But Montana has this amazing ability to make you feel like you have something special to offer. It gets behind you. It celebrates your success. It shares its secrets. It introduces you to anyone you could want to meet.
I am just as happy to be starting a business as I am my family in Montana. There is room to grow here. And so we will.
